Is Bob Barker Our Only Hope?


 

Welcome back, everyone! The Price Is Right's Bob Barker is known for being a game show host and an animal activist who has donated a lot of money to help non-profit organizations like Sea Shepard- even having a vessel named after him.

The Sea Shepard was founded by Paul Watson, also one of Greenpeace's founding members. The Sea Shepard movement has gained international notoriety, spreading over 20 countries that work together on direct-action campaigns (SeaShepard, 2022). The Sea Shepard works in trying to stop IUU fishing. I found an incredible story regarding human rights abuses regarding a notorious fishing vessel named Thunder. Video footage showed an unknown man being shot and killed onboard the Thunder- I will spare the footage because it is triggering. Nonetheless, the Thunder was wanted for IUU fishing, and Sea Shepard found this elusive fishing vessel, and an epic long high sea chase ensued. Spanning over 110 days, 10,000 miles, and 3 oceans. The Sea Shepard has thwarted the itinerary of many IUU fishing vessels, with currently 12 vessels that patrol the oceans to ensure that IUU fishing is stopped. Actively investigating and documenting when laws that are in place to protect the marine life of oceans are ignored and not enforced (Sea Shepard, 2022). Incredibly, a relatively small non-profit operation has the ability to enforce and capture IUU fishing vessels, which countries have simply not been able to achieve. This cannot be due lack of resources. One has to question why countries would turn a blind eye to IUU fishing. Perhaps they stand to lose a lot in revenue if they were to enforce laws prohibiting such actions. Perhaps they would be condemned by the international community for allowing human rights abuses to continue after years of empty promises. Whatever the reasoning may be, fighting IUU fishing needs to be a priority for countries because human rights abuse and overfishing are a massive problems. Thankfully we have Bob Barker and the Sea Shepard, who are relentless and continue to fight the good fight.

Who peels your shrimp?

AP Photo Dita Alangkara   Hey Everyone! So let's talk about shrimp, shrimp fisheries, shrimp labor, shrimp boats, shrimp companies, and the overall shrimp industry. That shrimp bit was my take on Bubba from Forest Gump. But really, those tasty little free-swimming crustaceans are small but have caused some significant waves around the world. Also, a fun fact before the doom of these creatures, did you know that flamingos are pink because they consume shrimp and algae with a high amount of beta carotene, an orange-reddish pigment that flamingos metabolize and turn their feathers into beautiful and vibrant shades of pink.
